C.Y.P. Installment Two: Bee House/Swiss Gold Combo

Next up to bat in our C.Y.P. installment is the Bee House Dripper/Swiss Gold filter combo. The Bee House has been on the scene for years now and often seems to get dismissed as old hat. Since it accepts a wide range of paper filters this bad boy is often used with cheap, nasty tasting paper filters. So lets take the paper out of the equation and swap it out with a reusable Swiss Gold filter and talk business.

-Reusable filter. No paper = no waste.
-Super easy to clean and store. A quick wash when you’re done and you’re good to go.
-Bigger body than a paper filter set up.
-There’s a 50% chance you have already have a Bee House somewhere in the back of your pantry behind the baking soda you’ll never use.

-If you’re afraid of sediment this might not be the set up for you. You definitely trade off some cup clarity and cleanliness for the body you get. You won’t have quite as much sediment as you would in say a french press but its definitely noticeable. The picture on the right is from a cup that’d been sitting for ten minutes then dumped. A decent amount of sediment going on.
-It’s not the hottest looking thing in the universe. It’s not ugly, but it does have a more old school look to it that some may shy away from.

If you like the idea of a pour over that’s easy to clean and maintain without the waste aspect of paper filters and don’t mind some sediment in your coffee you might want to take a closer look at this set up.

My mouth is watering. That’d go just right with some hot & fresh donuts on National Donut Day this Friday (6/3).

What I’m curious about is whether there’s a big difference between different pour-over cones when using similar filters. Like, what’s the difference between a Hario v60 with paper filter vs. a Beehouse with a quality paper filter in it (Filtropa or whatever)?
